The first clinical trial to test the efficacy of a sildenafil citrate-based erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, Viagra, is now underway, and it will be the first of its kind to offer patients a treatment option for erectile dysfunction, according to a new study published today by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The research, which is part of a larger study called the Efficacy of Sildenafil, was conducted by Dr. David Bly and colleagues at the National Institutes of Health. They were involved in the development and evaluation of the ED drug, the first of a novel, clinically-based, ED drug with an FDA-approved indication.
The results of the study are expected to be published by the end of the year.
The study, which included more than 3,600 men, has been conducted in more than 50 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia, according to a statement from Pfizer.
The drug, known as sildenafil citrate, is a generic version of the older class of PDE5 inhibitors, which was first approved by the FDA in 1998 and now under patent for several years. It was also approved in 2003 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men aged 18 and above, according to the FDA.
In the study, men with mild to moderate ED were randomly assigned to either a group of 10 to 20 milligrams (mg) of sildenafil citrate (Sildenafil) or a placebo for six months, then switched to a 50 mg dose of sildenafil citrate for another six months, or a 50 mg dose of sildenafil citrate for another six months.
In the men who took the drug, the percentage of subjects who suffered an erection for at least six hours was significantly lower than placebo, the study found.
However, in the men who did not take the drug, the men taking the drug had a significantly higher percentage of patients who suffered an erection for six hours.
The researchers also noted that the use of sildenafil citrate, in particular, may have a greater impact on erectile function and sexual activity in men with ED than in those with mild to moderate ED. They also found that the drug could help prevent impotence among men with ED who also are taking other medications.
“It is important to note that this is not a treatment for erectile dysfunction, and there is no guarantee that this drug will be effective in men who are taking other medications,” Dr. Bly said. “As with all treatment options, there is a potential for serious side effects.”
Dr. Bly and colleagues said that it’s important to note that the drug is not a cure for erectile dysfunction, but rather a treatment that helps men regain confidence in their abilities.
